OptiBlox® tissue-mimicking phantoms provide stable, characterized optical references for developing, testing, and validating medical imaging and sensing technologies. Choose from ready-to-ship standards or customized materials, optical properties, and geometries to match your application.
Q-T: Hard, homogeneous phantoms for straightforward testing and calibration. Four standard optical formulations are kept in stock, including a 75 × 75 × 20 mm format, and typically ship within 1–3 business days. Custom formulations and geometries are also available.
Q-X: Hard phantoms for complex and heterogeneous geometries. Optical properties can typically be tuned at 1–3 wavelengths, enabling more realistic device and tissue models.
Q-S: Soft silicone phantoms with multispectral optical tuning and flexibility in material hardness (durometer), ideal for applications requiring tissue-like mechanical properties.
All OptiBlox phantoms are supplied with quantitative optical-property characterization, helping teams replace subjective testing with reproducible measurements and accelerate development from R&D through validation.
QUEL Imaging provides specialized technical services to help teams develop, characterize, validate, and translate optical sensing and imaging technologies.
Our team combines expertise in tissue optics, quantitative imaging, phantom development, optical characterization, simulation, and regulatory science to support programs from early R&D through clinical and regulatory validation.
Services include:
Fluorescence Spectral Characterization — quantitative excitation-emission characterization of fluorophores, contrast agents, and tissue-mimicking materials.
Optical Property Characterization — traceable measurements of absorption and reduced scattering across the visible, NIR, and SWIR spectral regions.
Device Characterization Support — development of performance specifications, characterization protocols, verification methods, and custom test targets.
Regulatory Support — technical strategy, predicate comparisons, standards alignment, verification and validation planning, and support for 510(k), PMA, and related submissions.
Simulation Services — Monte Carlo light-transport modeling and digital twins to predict performance, optimize designs, and connect experimental measurements with simulation.
Multi-Center Imaging Study Support — phantom-based site qualification, training, imaging workflow standardization, performance assessment, and quantitative image-analysis support.
Our services are designed to help teams generate reproducible, quantitative evidence, identify technical risks earlier, and build a stronger foundation for product development, clinical studies, and regulatory review.
Bring us your imaging or sensing challenge—we’ll help you build the tools, measurements, and validation strategy to move it forward.

Standardize. Compare. Validate.
QUEL Imaging’s shelf-stable fluorescence reference targets make it easier to characterize imaging-system performance with repeatable, quantitative measurements, without the variability and preparation time of liquid solutions or tissue samples.
Our solid phantom families are engineered to mimic the fluorescence behavior of clinically and preclinically relevant fluorophores, including ICG, Cytalux, IRDye800, and SGM-101, helping imaging teams accelerate development, comparison, and validation.
Reference target sets support quantitative assessment of:
Limit of detection and sensitivity
Spatial resolution
Depth of focus and relative depth sensitivity
Illumination and collection uniformity
Geometric distortion
System-to-system and predicate comparisons
These measurements can support device development, quality assurance, and regulatory documentation, including predicate comparisons for FDA 510(k) submissions.
For long-term monitoring of optical collection efficiency, we also offer a solid-state Radiometric Emitter Target designed to provide a stable reference over time.
Our open-source QUEL-QAL analysis library provides standardized tools for analyzing fluorescence images from QUEL Imaging reference targets and similar phantoms.
Move beyond subjective “looks bright” testing with quantitative, traceable performance measurements.
Bring dynamic testing into a controlled, repeatable tissue-like environment.
FluoFlow® phantoms incorporate flow channels within customizable OptiBlox® tissue-mimicking materials, enabling researchers and product developers to evaluate imaging systems, contrast agents, blood and other flowing media under realistic optical conditions.
Applications include fluorescence probe development, perfusion and vascular imaging, hyperspectral and multispectral imaging, wearable sensing, dynamic image-analysis algorithms and photoacoustic imaging(coming soon).
FluoFlow® phantoms are available in Q-X hard phantom formulations and select Q-S soft silicone formulations. Channel geometry, phantom geometry, optical absorption and reduced scattering can be customized for specific applications and wavelengths across the VIS, NIR and SWIR regions. Integrated adapters simplify connection to external pumps and flow systems.
For optical contrast-agent developers, FluoFlow® provides a practical way to test candidates early and often. Brightness alone does not determine in vivo performance: tissue absorption, scattering, depth and geometry can substantially affect detectability. A controlled tissue-mimicking model can help identify these limitations before moving into more expensive animal or clinical studies.
Our team combines advanced phantom manufacturing with quantitative optical characterization and deep expertise in light-tissue interactions. Contact us to discuss a custom FluoFlow® configuration for your application. https://shop.quelimaging.com/resources/#contact
