Allison Transmission, the largest manufacturer of automatic transmissions for armoured fighting vehicles (AFV) in the US, showcased its latest eGen Force Hybrid Electric propulsion system designed for specifically for AFVs at Eurosatory last week.
Speaking to Shephard in Paris, a spokesperson for Allison Transmission said the new transmission “meets user requirements across a wide range of applications include infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) and main battle tank (MBT) markets”.
eGen extends beyond the capabilities of traditional transmissions by functioning as a power distribution system with electric motor and inverter. The technology not only provides power for the vehicle but also allows for parallel hybrid operation.

It features a fully integrated autonomous drive, steer and braking system with eight forward and three reverse gears providing an efficient 12:1 ratio coverage. It has a 220kW electric motor and associated inverter for onboard vehicle power and parallel electric hybrid operation.
The transmission has just been selected for the XM30 Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) being developed by a US Rheinmetall-led team under contract to the US Army as a replacement for the current M2 Bradley IFV and variants.
Allison Transmission was also showing its 3040 MX cross-drive transmission designed for medium-tracked vehicles
and provides the propulsion, steering and braking functions. The 3040 MX has also been designed to accommodate future controls platforms evolutions.
In addition, Allison showed its series 400 automatic transmission for wheeled AFV.
While most Allison Transmission are supplied from the US, some are manufactured under licence, an example being Caterpillar who has manufactured Allison Transmission products in the UK.
The X-300 series has been manufactured under licence for many years, with further growth potential underway to take into account the increased weight of the latest IFVs and keep the power-to-weight ratio as high as possible.
The X-300 are installed in the RBSL Warrior IFV and the Swedish BAE Systems Hagglunds CV90 family of IFV and variants.
