Description
Cilas is showcasing its HELMA-P counter-UAS (C-UAS) laser weapon at Eurosatory 2024 which is being considered for use at Paris 2024 Olympic Games. While the system was officially launched at the previous edition of the French exhibition, the Orleans-based company unveiled the HELMA-P this year.
The laser weapon consists of a small turret that features an illuminator, a camera, a LiDAR and a laser emitter. According to Cilas, the HELMA-P produces a 2kW laser beam and is capable of detecting, tracking and neutralising drones at a distance of up to 1km.
Shephard understands that the laser weapon can be used as a fixed system or fitted on a vehicle or vessel.Cilas said its HELMA-P laser weapon was trialled during the French Air Force-organised exercise COUBERTIN LAD 2. (Photo: Giovanni Rasio)
The HELMA-P has been tested several times on land and at sea with the support of the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA), the Defence Innovation Agency (AID) and the French Navy.
A spokesperson from Cilas revealed to Shephard that the French Air Force is considering integrating the HELMA-P into the wider anti-drone protection system for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The laser weapon was trialled during the exercise COUBERTIN LAD 2 organised by the French Air Force. The training was focused on testing anti-drone warfare capabilities ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. According to the company, the results were satisfactory.
The HELMA-P is also one of the hard kill effectors of MBDA's Sky Warden C-UAS system. At Eurosatory 2024, the laser weapon could also be seen integrated into a special forces SHERPA vehicle displayed at MBDA's stand.
