Singapore-based ST Engineering has unveiled the latest member of its Terrex (8x8) family of armoured fighting vehicles (AFV)in model form at Eurosatory with the original Terrex being deployed by the Singapore armed forces in numerous configurations for many years.
Product development of the Terrex s5 commenced in 2022, although research on hybrid electric drive (HED) technology started as early as 2020 with the aim of offering a fully digitalised HED option to allow for future growth.
The ‘s' in the Terrex designation stands for smartness, superiority, sustainability, survivability and serviceability.

ST Engineering said: “The development of the Terrex s5 is complete and can move into the production phase when orders are placed. It is able to accept HED when required.”
Gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the Terrex s5 is being quoted as 35 tonnes of which 13 tonnes is payload including weapons, ammunition, fuel and crew. The latter will consist of commander/gunner and 10 dismounts seated five each side facing inwards.
It is powered by a Caterpillar turbocharged diesel engine developing 711hp coupled to an Allison automatic transmission with seven forward and two reverse gears offering a maximum road speed of 120km/h.
For a high level of cross-country mobility, it is fitted with independent suspension on all eight wheels, with powered steering on the front four wheels.
Protection is to STANAG 4569 Level 4 ballistic and Level 4a/b against mine blast.
Other features include advanced multi-mission systems (MMS) for the commander and driver, cameras for situational awareness through 360 degrees, on-board diagnostics, and a health and usage monitoring system (HUMS).
The Terrex s5 model being shown in Paris can be fitted with a ST Engineering Adder remote control turret armed with a stabilised Northrop Grumman MK44S 30mm dual feed cannon and 7.62mm co-axial MG and with integrated grenade launchers.
The fire control system includes automatic target detection (ATD) and Automatic Target Tracking (ATT) via the MMS.
One of the options for the Terrex s5 is the installation of a HED system consisting of a range extender with a lithium battery which has a power output of 1,200hp. The system would give a silent running range of up to 50km, according to ST Engineering. On board power is stated to be 50kW at 28 V DC or 450kW at 700 V DC.
ST Engineering is offering a wide range of variants of the New Generation Terrex s5 including infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), anti-tank guided missile, 120mm Super Rapid Advanced Mortar System (SRAMS), command, fire support and a lighter amphibious version.
